Viktualienmarkt
Stroll between classic Bavarian goods and exotic delicacies
The Viktualienmarkt is Munich’s largest fruit and vegetable market.
A “herb market” began in 1807 on the grounds of the abolished Heiliggeistspital, which expanded over time and already had today’s dimensions about 100 years ago.
In the immediate vicinity is the Schrannenhalle, which King Max II had built in 1851 on the Parisian model. It is a building over 430 m long in which grain was sold. In 1932 the hall burned down.
At the end of September 2005, the hall with its original steel structure was reopened as a vibrant marketplace with an extraordinary range of manufactures, culture and gastronomy.
